Thomas Woodcock 1784-1842

My 5th great grandmother, Nansie “Ann” Woodcock was baptised at St John the Baptist Church, Penistone, Yorkshire on 04 May 1809. Her baptism record states that she was the daughter of Thomas WOODCOCK and Mary SHAW1.

The other children of Thomas WOODCOCK and Mary SHAW (Rebecca, Hannah, Rachel, George, Mary, Jonathan, and John) were also baptised at St John the Baptist Church in Penistone between the years 1806-1829.

Some of the children had the name of the family farm, West Thorp (in Hoylandswaine), mentioned on their baptism record. For example, Jonathan’s baptism2:

Thomas WOODCOCK and Mary SHAW were married in Rotherham, Yorkhshire, on 11 August 1806 – just 3 months before their first child Rebecca was born3.

In 1841, Thomas and Mary WOODCOCK were living at West Thorp, Silkstone. They had their son John living with them, and a “lodger” Jonathan EARNSHAW, who was their grandson (the eldest son of Ann WOODCOCK and William EARNSHAW4).

On the 1851 census, Mary WOODCOCK (nee SHAW) can be found living at 1 West Thorp, Hoylandswaine, with her sons George, John and Thomas. Mary was a widow5.

From the 1841 census record (which rounded the age down to the nearest 5 years), and the burial record of Thomas WOODCOCK, I estimate his birth to have been about 1784.

There was a baptism of Thomas WOODCOCK at St John the Baptist Church in Penistone on 12 September 1784. This record shows that the father of Thomas WOODCOCK (Jonathan) was also living at West Thorp farm in Hoylandswaine8. Thomas WOODCOCK had lived on that farm his whole life.
