Sarah Ann HOUSE is the mother of Ben’s 2nd Great Grandmother, Sarah Ann House SINGLETON who was baptised in Puddletown, Dorset on 26 December 18691. The family were living at Waterson, Puddletown. Sarah Ann HOUSE’s husband, Samuel SINGLETON was in the military and was a driver in the horse artillery in 1869.

I have not been able to find Sarah Ann SINGLETON or her husband Samuel on the 1871 census. When their daughter Sarah Ann House SINGLETON was born in 1869 her father’s occupation was given as Driver, Horse Artillery. Perhaps, considering they were military, they were away for work?

In 1881, Samuel and Sarah Ann SINGLETON were living at the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich6 with their daughter Sarah Ann House SINGLETON, who was still an only-child.

In 1891, Sarah A HOUSE (SINGLETON) was living with her daughter Sarah Ann House SINGLETON, her husband James T MARLOW and their newborn baby daughter Florence A MARLOW at 72 Harefield Road, Basingstoke, Hampshire7. Sarah and Samuel SINGLETON had another child, William J SINGLETON, who is estimated to have born about 1883. Sarah Ann HOUSE (SINGLETON) was working as a laundress. Without finding Samuel SINGLETON on the 1891 census, it is difficult to know why Sarah Ann HOUSE (SINGLETON) was living with her daughter and family – perhaps she was there to help with the new baby?

They had both of their children living with them – Sarah HYDE is the same Sarah Ann House SINGLETON who was married to James T MARLOW on the previous census, she had remarried after James’ death in 1898. The MARLOW family had 3 daughters: Florence, Edith and Mabel; and Sarah Ann House SINGLETON also had a son with her husband Harry Thomas Charles HYDE.
