Jane Beet 1845-1908

Jane BEET was the mother of my 2nd Great Grandmother Mary Hannah BUTTON – who was born in Low Valley, Darfield on 11 August 18761. Jane’s husband Giles BUTTON was a brickmaker. I have a copy of Mary Hannah BUTTON’s birth certificate so fortunately it makes the relationships clear and so no further records were needed to prove that Jane BEET is my 3rd great grandmother.

Jane was baptised in Thurgoland on 13 July 18452. Jane was the daughter of John & Mary BEET who lived at Ramsden Row, Thurgoland. John BEET was a Wire Drawer and worked in Thurgoland for most of his life. Jane was one of John and Mary’s 9 children. I also have a copy of Jane’s birth certificate3, which gives her mother Mary’s maiden name, which was EARNSHAW, and Jane’s date of birth which was 20 May 1845.

1861 Census

In 1861, Jane BEET was still living at home at Ramsden Row, Thurgoland5, aged 15, with her parents John & Mary BEET and more of her siblings that were born during the preceding decade. Her older brother William was now working as a wire drawer like his father, and although Jane didn’t have an occupation she would have probably helped her mother in the home. Her husband-to-be Giles was also living in Thurgoland during this year6, so it is very likely that they met in the village.

Jane BEET and Giles BUTTON were married on 30 July 1866 at St Nicholas Church, Bradfield7. I absolutely love the church at Bradfield, the first time I saw it on top of the hill (before I knew about Jane and Giles being married there) I fell in love with it and I am glad it is now part of my history.

1871 Census

In 1871, Giles and Jane BUTTON were living at Low Street, Monk Bretton8. They had their first two children: Albert (born abt. 1868), and Giles (born abt. 1869). My 2nd great grandmother Mary Hannah BUTTON would be born during this next decade. The family story is that Mary Hannah BUTTON had scarlet fever when she was very young, and Giles nursed her back to health. Giles died shortly afterwards, of scarlet fever.

Giles BUTTON died about October 18789, and Jane BEET (BUTTON) remarried 2 years later. She married John ROEBUCK in Barnsley, about March 188010. John ROEBUCK was a coal miner from Rawmarsh, Yorkshire who was living in Darfield and working in the colliery at Low Valley, Darfield.

1881 Census

In 1881, John and Jane ROEBUCK were living at Company Terrace, Darfield11. Jane and Giles BUTTON had 5 more children before Giles had died: Frank (born abt. 1871), Walter (born abt. 1874), Mary (born abt. 1877), Henry (born abt. 1879), and John (born abt. 1880), and John has listed them on the census as his sons, and not his adopted sons. I like to believe he has welcomed Jane and the children into his family and treats them as his own. Jane’s oldest sons Albert and Giles BUTTON were also working in the coal mine with John ROEBUCK.

In 1891, John and Jane ROEBUCK were living at Company Row, George Street, Darfield12. They had two sons together, John A ROEBUCK (born abt. 1881), and William ROEBUCK (born abt. 1886). I am thankful for John ROEBUCK because this where Mary Hannah BUTTON met my 2nd great grandfather John LINLEY, whose family also worked at the mine in Darfield.

Jane BEET (ROEBUCK) died in Darfield in early 1910, at the age of 6414 . She was buried with her husband John ROEBUCK (who died in 1905) on 31 January 1910 at All Saints Church, Darfield15. I went to the church to see if I could find the grave – as I had the grave number 143 provided by Sheffield Indexers – but sadly there was no headstone in-between graves 142 and 144 (pictured). Their granddaughter Martha Annie ROEBUCK died at 18 months old and was buried with them on 06 February 1918.
