Giles Button 1842-1878

Giles BUTTON is the father of my 2nd Great Grandmother Mary Hannah BUTTON – who was born in Low Valley, Darfield on 11 August 18761. Giles BUTTON was a brick-maker and he moved regularly across West and South Yorkshire to find work along with his father and brothers, who were also brick-makers.

In 1861 Giles BUTTON was living at Spring Row, Thurgoland, Yorkshire5. His mother Hannah (but written as Emma) was widowed and working as a teacher. Giles BUTTON was 18 and working as a brick maker. He met his future wife, Jane BEET, while living in Thurgoland.

I have a theory that Giles BUTTON may have helped to build Spring Row, which was made of brick and completed in 1855 (or at least worked for the builder of those houses while he was living there). The houses backed onto the trans pennine trail, which was a working railway in 1861, so it must have been a busy and noisy place to live!

Giles BUTTON and Jane BEET were married on 30 July 1866 at St Nicholas Church, Bradfield6. I absolutely love the church at Bradfield, the first time I saw it on top of the hill (before I knew about Jane and Giles being married there) I fell in love with it and I am glad it is now part of my history.
