Military Service

In 1885 George Edward FLISHER joined the Royal Navy. He would have been 16 years old when he enlisted, and the enlistment papers give a physical description:

5’3″. Light brown hair, blue eyes, fair complexion

I have not been able to find George Edward FLISHER on the 1891 census, I presume he might have been at sea. His military record shows that he served on the Temeraine between 12 July 1889-21 June 1891 (the date of the 1891 census was 05 April 1891).

1901 Census

In 1901 George FLISHER was a boarder in the household of Alfred and Alice ALLARD at 35 Thomas Street, Rochester, Kent6. George FLISHER and Alice ALLARD (nee DURRANT) go on to marry eachother in 1910. Their first child George FLISHER and Alice DURRANT had together was George James Thomas FLISHER who was born 03 November 19017. The date of this census was 01 April 1901, which means that when this census was taken George and Alice may have already been in a relationship. It is believed that Alfred ALLARD moved to Canada, but I do not have any records to confirm this.

1911 Census

In 1911 George and Alice FLISHER were living at 61a Best Back Street, Chatham, Kent9. It mentions the 3 children from Alice’s first marriage: Florence, Winifred and Emilie Ann ALLARD. Florence and Winifred ALLARD have been crossed out, presumably because they were not present at home on the night when the census was taken. There was also some confusion as to how many children were born during the marriage, because George Edward FLISHER and Alice Eliza DURRANT had 3 children together by this point, but they were born before the marriage which took place on 20 November 191010. These children were George James Thomas FLISHER, John Edward FLISHER (also known as Jack), and my great grandfather Bert Albert Frederick FLISHER.

1939 Register

In 1939 George Edward FLISHER was living in a Public Assistance Institution in Coxheath, Kent11. It is said that he is a widower, but his wife was working as a hoppicker in Horsmonden during this time. I wonder if perhaps they assumed he was a widower because Alice had never visited?
