Elizabeth Ann Cheshire 1811-1854

Elizabeth Ann CHESHIRE is the mother of my 3rd great grandfather Charles James GREAVES, who was baptised in St Matthew’s Church, Brixton on 22 June 1824¹.

Marriage

James GREAVES married Elizabeth Ann CHESHIRE at St Mark’s Church, Kennington, Surrey².

1841 Census

In 1841 James and Elizabeth GREAVES were living at James Street, Clapham, Surrey³. James was working as a male servant. The couple had 4 children: Charles, James, William and Elizabeth.

1851 Census

In 1851 James and Elizabeth were living at 1 Stockwell Cottages, Lambeth, Surrey⁴. James GREAVES was working as a gardener, and the couple had 2 more children: Henry and Clara. Elizabeth GREAVES (CHESHIRE) died in 1854, she had one more son between this census and her death: Rollo.

Death

Elizabeth Ann CHESHIRE (GREAVES) died in Stockwell, Surrey about July 1854 at the age of 44. She was buried at St Matthew’s Church, Brixton, Surrey on 26 July 1854⁵.

Baptism

I have not been able to find a baptism record for Elizabeth Ann CHESHIRE in Stockwell, Surrey, there appears to be a gap in the baptismal records for St Mary’s Church, Lambeth, Surrey for the year 1811.

When searching the baptismal records for other children named CHESHIRE in the same parish, I found the following siblings for Elizabeth: Mary Sophia baptised 29 September 1805⁶, James baptised 17 April 1808⁷, John baptised 26 June 1814⁸, and Mary Ann baptised 27 July 1817⁹.

When I added these siblings to my tree, my Ancestry ThruLines updated to show that I had DNA matches to the descendants of 2 of those siblings: Mary Sophia and James CHESHIRE.

The CHESHIRE siblings all have links to each other in different records I have found which further confirms their relationships:

1. Elizabeth Ann CHESHIRE was a witness on Mary Sophia’s Marriage to William HEDGER in 1828¹⁰.
2. John CHESHIRE’s son John CHESHIRE Jnr. lived with his uncle James CHESHIRE after his father’s death in 1849¹¹.
3. John CHESHIRE¹² and Mary Ann CHESHIRE¹³ were both baptised in St Mary’s Church, Lambeth, Surrey and gives their parents’ residence as Garden Row.
4. Mary Sophia lived on Water Lane in the 1841 census¹⁴, which is the address listed on their father John CHESHIRE’s burial record¹⁵.
5. In 1851 Elizabeth Ann CHESHIRE and her husband James GREAVES were living at 1 Stockwell Cottages, which is where her brother James CHESHIRE was living in 1861 – 1 Prospect Place, formerly Stockwell Cottages.
